The annual Lewis and Clark Community College Trebuchet contest, now in its 15th year, is a modern, nonviolent and educational application of this medieval device - The Trebuchet. Teams of four to five high school students representing school districts in the L&C district plan, design, build and test trebuchets, under the guidance of a teacher or coach who serves as the sponsor for the team. The contest is a great opportunity for students to apply lessons learned in physics and math to a hands-on application. In addition, the event fosters team building, exploration, and problem solving. These are critical skills for those interested in pursuing jobs in an engineering field.
Representing Bunker Hill High School this year were two teams from Mr. Goltz’s physics class. The teams were Team AVC (Daniel Manar, Grant Burch, Isaac Steward, Drake Scroggins) and The Bunker Hillbillies (Kimberly Moore, Nathaniel Winchester, and Austin Eddinger).
The teams compete by shooting rubber balls at the opposing teams bucket located in front of their trebuchet. Whichever team can make the most amount of shots in the other team’s bucket after 5 minutes wins the match. Bunker Hillbillies won 2 rounds with kill shots meaning they completely knocked out the other teams trebuchet and ended the contest. They also earned two victories in a sudden death shootout. Team AVC won one of their matches in sudden death.
Overall the Bunker Hillbillies won 5 matches and lost 3. Team AVC won 8 matches and lost 2 earning them a trip to the championship round versus Edwardsville high school. AVC won the match making this the first trebuchet championship for BHHS since entering the contest many years ago. Great job to both teams!

The softball game on 4/5 at Hillsboro has been canceled.

Mr. Banwart's US Honors History class held a mock trial last week. The trial helped students understand the fears many Americans had in the early days of the Cold War of espionage and Soviet nuclear capabilities. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, two of the defendants in this case, were accused of selling secrets to the Soviets. Mrs. Eschbach's class, which served as the jury, rendered a vote of "not guilty". In the real case, Julius and Ethel both were convicted and received the death penalty.

BHHS held its career fair last Friday. Our students were able to meet with representatives from various companies and colleges to discuss career options.
