Dear Bunker Hill Families –
As you know, we face an unprecedented public health crisis as a community. Nearly two weeks ago, Governor Pritzker issued an Executive Order mandating the statewide closure of all K-12 schools initially until March 30, but then extended it to April 7, 2020.
During this time, our district has rapidly adapted to these challenges by delivering meals and continuous learning materials while still doing our part in practicing social distancing and complying with the “stay at home” order.
We realize that not all families are equitably suited to participate in e-learning as the availability of broadband is limited, especially in outlying areas. I have been working to obtain hotspots for our unconnected families but so far have not had any luck, as demand right now is far surpassing supply. So in the next couple of weeks moving forward, here is what our district will be focusing on:
- Continuing to feed our children. ISBE has granted great flexibility during the Covid-19 closure allowing us to feed any child 18 and under, regardless of resident district
- Pursuing ways in which to convert to some type of remote learning but doing so without leaving anyone behind. Digital equity has risen to the forefront now and we don’t want any families unconnected
- Meeting the needs of our community. If you know of ANY needs (the elderly, financial resources, etc) PLEASE reach out to our office (618) 585-3116. Our resources are limited but we will hopefully be able to connect anyone with needs to the appropriate outreach
In the meantime, let us not forget to reach out and offer help to the local food pantry and any other charity right now. This is a time of great need, and they will feel an immediate impact. If you would like to donate to the school’s BH relief fund, please send a check to:

This fund will be used to provide impacted Bunker Hill #8 families with help to offset this economic slowdown, and will be provided in terms of gift cards to local (BH) businesses like Short Stop, Meehan’s, Phillips 66, etc. Additionally, were this closure to extend longer, families would be able to utilize these funds to purchase crayons, pencils, and other school supplies needed for at-home instruction. This way, we are helping our own families and at the same time hopefully helping our local businesses to weather this storm.
Again, these are very uncertain times. I wish they weren’t happening, as our district had been gaining significant momentum in moving our district forward with many student-centered initiatives. However, in any time of crisis, we must set aside our own goals and work toward the collective good of our own community. I am so thankful to be in such a wonderful community in a time like this. Please know that WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER! As a learning community, we have shown that we will INSPIRE, EMPOWER & INNOVATE!
